La voz de la añoranza: Picasso hablando en español

Única entrevista concedida por Picasso en español, realizada por el periodista Julián Antonio Ramírez en el transcurso del homenaje al pintor en Vallauris, celebrado el 29 de octubre de 1961 con motivo de su 80 aniversario. Ramírez fue responsable de programas en Radio París, emisora de los exiliados que desde mediados de los años 50 informaba sobre España.

— Yo quiero preguntarle especialmente: ¿qué lugar ocupa el recuerdo de España en su vida actual?

— Podría ser que enteramente lo llena... vamos, que yo nunca he olvidado España y siendo [sic] cada vez al extranjero se vuelve uno más español aún. Pero, en fin, ya sabe usted que yo he vivido aquí toda mi vida y que mi madre, mi mujer, mi hermana y mis niños son de aquí.

— De modo que es usted más español cada vez.

— Cada vez más español. Y ya verá usted cuando si usted se va al extranjero, cada vez se vuelve uno más español, como un francés seguramente francés.

— ¿Desea usted ir a España físicamente?

— Físicamente sí, pero ahora ya lo sabe usted que no, que no volveré más.

The only interview given by Picasso in Spanish, with the journalist Julián Antonio Ramírez during a tribute to the painter at Vallauris, held on 29 October 1961, to celebrate his 80th birthday. Ramírez was responsible for the programmes at Radio París, a station for Spanish exiles which broadcast news on Spain from the mid-1950s.

— I particularly wanted to ask you, what place does the memory of Spain have in your life at present?

— Fills it completely, maybe… I mean, I’ve never forgotten Spain and being more abroad [sic] makes you even more Spanish. But at the end of the day, you know that I’ve lived here all my life and that my mother, my wife, my sister and my children are from here.

— So you feel increasingly Spanish?

— More and more Spanish. You see, when you go live abroad, you become even more Spanish and for sure, a French person even more French. 

— Would you like to return to Spain physically?

— Physically yes, but you know now that I won’t, I won’t go back again.
